Air-travel fatality rate hits all-time low

By Rob Lovitt, msnbc.com contributor

Travelers fretting about the hazards of air travel ? missed connections, lost bags, etc. ? can rest easy on at least one front. According to a just-released analysis from Ascend, a London-based aviation consulting company, flying is safer than ever.

?We still have a few days left but, provisionally speaking, 2011 is going to be the best year ever for safety,? said Paul Hayes, the company?s director of safety. ?The number of passengers killed was down considerably.?

On a global basis, there have been 401 fatalities on commercial and charter aircraft so far this year, down from 726 in 2010. With the world?s airlines carrying almost 2.9 billion passengers this year, that works out to one fatality for every 7.1 million passengers flown, the lowest rate since the company began tracking the data in 1990.

?There are a couple of things in play,? said aviation consultant Peter Goeltz, senior vice president with O?Neill and Associates and former director of the National Transportation Safety Board. ?Aircraft and avionics are better than ever, training is better and we?re getting more information on potential danger points because pilots can report mistakes without being punished.?

Not surprisingly, such developments are more prevalent among larger carriers and those servicing the developed nations of the Europe, Asia and North America. ?I wouldn?t fly Kyrgyzstan Airways or any other ?Stan Airways for that matter,? said Goelz, ?and Africa is still a terrible place to fly due to the lack of infrastructure and civil aviation oversight.?

As a result, said Hayes, ?The major carriers in the U.S. and Western Europe are probably considerably better than the average.?

Such numbers also bode well for the future, at least for the majority of travelers who fly those carriers, said aviation safety consultant and former commercial pilot Steve Cowell of SRC Aviation LLC.

?People should not only be happy about the [current] improvements; they should also expect continued improvement,? he told msnbc.com, especially as the next generation of technically advanced aircraft take to the skies.

?Those airplanes are going to improve people?s experience as passengers and consequently improve the safety of the system as a whole.?

Best Tweet of the Year - Le?gal In?sur?rec?tion

The Best Tweet of the Year competition was really, really tough. There were so many great tweets arising out of the Occupy Wall Street protests that it could have been its own category.? Not surprisingly, Obama also was a hot topic.

I excluded from consideration tweets regarding the Republican primary candidates; since I?m not neutral on that topic any tweets I chose would have been considered a political choice.? The last thing I would want is to see the Tweet of the Year selection process, with the tremendous prestige?and publicity which accompanies the winner,?politicized like the Nobel Peace Prize.

All of the winners appeared in posts at Legal Insurrection, which you can view by clicking on the ?link? under the image, if you want to see background and context.

1st Place ? Iowahawkblog ? Pretty much sums up the absurdity of Obama.? On the one hand, Obama with great bluster and fanfare invoked the spirit of Teddy Roosevelt in setting the theme for his 2012 campaign.? On the other hand, Obama hardly is the heroic figure charging into real battle, more like the teenager who runs up the credit card charges at the mall buying presents for friends and leaves others to pay.

link

2nd Place ? AlisonKosikCNN ? This tweet by a CNN reporter about the purpose of the Occupy Wall Street protests caught her a lot of trouble.? Click the link for details.? She ended up deleting the tweet and apologizing.? But the tweet captured the essence of the OWS movement at its inception

link

3rd Place ? Tie -? I could not decide between these two.? The first, by LI reader DDsModernLife, is based upon a reader comment about media bias in reporting jobs numbers.? The second, by Justin Hart, concerned the reaction in Wisconsin upon learning that the recall efforts to take back the state Senate had fallen short; how could I not have a tweet about the lunacy in Wisconsin as one of the award winners?

GTA III modifications appearing in Android version

    Android Central

The anniversary edition of Grand Theft Auto III is quite simply magnificent. It truly is a mark of how far technology has advanced in the last ten years. And in true Android fashion, GTA III can be customised with just a tiny little bit of work.

It turns out that modifying the Android version of the game is in fact as simple as modifying the PC version. By adding files to the directory on the SD card. As an added bonus, it turns out the PC and Android versions of the game are so similar, that many PC modifications actually work on the Android version so you can soup up your cars and add custom textures to your heart's content.

Kobe: I directed A-Rod to German knee therapy

    By GREG BEACHAM

    updated 11:24 p.m. ET Dec. 29, 2011

LOS ANGELES - Kobe Bryant confirms he recently directed Alex Rodriguez to the German doctor who performed the treatment the Yankees' slugger had on his right knee.

"I gave him the phone number," Bryant said Thursday night before the Los Angeles Lakers hosted the New York Knicks.

Bryant opened up about the steps he has taken to heal his arthritic joints in a rare pregame interview, crediting the therapy with dramatic improvement in his own troublesome right knee and an injured left ankle in recent months.

When Rodriguez inquired about Bryant's treatment, Bryant vouched for the German doctor who developed the course of injections of plasma-rich platelets that supposedly stimulate healing in arthritis-affected areas.

Bryant says his knee is now 95 percent healthy after at least three surgeries in the last eight years. He apparently had the same treatment done in October on his ankle, which also isn't limiting him this season.

"You can't just try something just to try it," Bryant said. "It has to make sense. It has to be something that you can back with research and study and things like that."

And how did Bryant get information about the therapy ? called Orthokine ? being done in Duesseldorf?

"It's my job to know these things," Bryant said with a grin.

The Yankees might benefit from Bryant's knowledge. General manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday that Rodriguez is "100 percent," with "no red flags" going into spring training.

Rodriguez had surgery on his right knee last July and saw his power drop in the second half and postseason. He played in 99 games and hit 16 homers, struggling to produce at his usual prolific levels.

Bryant is far from fully healthy. He's still playing with a torn ligament in his right wrist, wearing a brace on the joint whenever he isn't on court.

He's no longer wearing a wrap on the oft-injured index finger on his right hand, but that's because the joint is now "bone on bone," according to Bryant.

And Bryant hasn't stopped trying new things to heal more quickly and thoroughly. Several Lakers joined him at a cryotherapy clinic in the Sacramento area on Monday, trying out an extreme cold chamber that's thought to decrease pain and swelling in athletes.

Bryant can't remember when his friendship with A-Rod started, but they've been friendly for years, going out to dinner and talking regularly. He's grateful he could help the 36-year-old slugger get back in top shape.

"As a Yankee fan? Hell yeah," Bryant said.

Bethlehem church cleaning turns into dust-up between rival monks

Armenian and Greek Orthodox clergy wielding brooms

The annual Christmas cleaning of the church ahead of Orthodox Christmas turned into scuffles on Wednesday between the Armenian and Greek Orthodox clerics. Photograph: Ammar Awad/Reuters

The annual cleaning of one of Christianity's holiest churches sparked a brawl between rival clergy on Wednesday, as dozens of monks feuding over sacred space at the Church of the Nativity battled each other with brooms until police intervened.

The ancient church, built over the traditional site of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem, is shared by three Christian denominations ? Roman Catholics, Armenians and Greek Orthodox. Wednesday's fight involved Greek and Armenian clergy, with each side accusing the other of encroaching on parts of the church to which it lays claim.

The monks were tidying up the church ahead of Orthodox Christmas celebrations in early January, following celebrations by Western Christians on 25 December. The fight erupted between monks along the border of their respective areas. Some shouted and hurled brooms.

Palestinian security forces rushed in to break up the melee, and no serious injuries were reported. A Palestinian police spokesman would not immediately comment.

A fragile status quo governs relations among the denominations at the ancient church, and to repair or clean a part of the structure is to own it, according to accepted practice. That means that letting other sects clean part of the church could allow one to gain ground at another's expense. Similar fights have taken place during the same late-December cleaning effort in the past.

Tensions between rival clergy at the church have been a fact of life there for centuries and have often been caught up in international politics.

In the 1800s, friction between the denominations at the church ? each backed by foreign powers ? became so fraught that Russian Czar Nicholas I deployed troops along the Danube to threaten a Turkish sultan who had been favouring the Catholics over the Orthodox.

Those disagreements threaten the integrity of the church itself, which was originally built 1,500 years ago and parts of which have fallen into disrepair. Although the roof has needed urgent work for decades, and leaking rainwater has ruined much of the priceless artwork inside, a renovation has been delayed all these years by disagreements among the denominations over who would pay.

Only recently, the Palestinian Authority brokered an agreement to move ahead with replacing the roof, and officials hope work will begin in 2012.

Cities with the best economies in America

It turns out ?Don?t Mess With Texas,? is more than just a slogan. At least judging by the state?s ability to rebound from the Great Recession, and its dominance over the rankings in a new report highlighting the best-performing U.S. cities.

San Antonio heads up the Milken Institute?s 2011 Best-Performing Cities index, but is just one of four Texas cities in the top five and nine of the 25 best in the country. The Lone Star State grades out well in job creation, according to the report, which found that Texas employers were responsible for one of every five U.S. jobs created from June 2010 to June 2011.

Ross DeVol, the Milken Institute?s chief research officer, leads the team that compiles the index and said that a number of factors lie behind Texas? success, some unique to the region and others that cities elsewhere in the U.S. can try to emulate.

    Forbes.com slideshow: America?s 25 best-performing cities

For one thing, many Texas metro areas are benefiting from the military?s Base Realignment and Consolidation process, which has brought more families near the state?s armed forces facilities, from San Antonio?s Lackland Air Force Base to Killeen?s Fort Hood. Those families need housing, health care and other services, DeVol points out.

Texas is also seeing a surge in IT equipment and software employment. DeVol highlights Apple?s expansion in Austin, where the company is said to be getting chips for its iPad, as well as significant presences from the likes of AT&T, IBM and Advanced Micro Devices.

?Given the depth of the Great Recession,? DeVol says, ?businesses have become more focused on cost.? Texas, which has no state income tax, is very understanding of ?the need for companies to be competitive,? he adds, citing streamlined processes that allow employers to get new facilities up and running faster and aggressive recruiting of out-of-state businesses to cities where they can hire qualified workers for less than in New York, California, Massachusetts or many other states.

Forbes.com: Where The One Percent live

The cost issue is also a big factor in Utah, the only state other than Texas to put more than one metro area among the 25 best performers. Provo touts the educated workforce stemming from Brigham Young University, while Salt Lake City was a big gainer in a year when its mining presence was greeted with big demand for gold and silver. Both, along with Ogden and Logan (Utah-Idaho), which topped the Milken Institute?s list of best-performing small cities, offer low-cost destinations for employers focused on keeping expenses in line.

Utah also benefits by having plenty of room for development, an issue that limits the potential for growth in some larger metro areas like the one around New York. While DeVol points out that the NYC area was hurt by the loss of financial services jobs in 2011 ? a trend that has continued with cuts announced at Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and others this fall ? he also notes that many bigger metro areas did not fall off as much as others during the Great Recession.

While that means those economies proved more resilient to the downturn, it also means they are not springing back off a depressed base. To wit, none of the 10 largest metros cracked the top 10 Best-Performing Cities for the first time since 2008.

Forbes.com: 25 top suburbs for retirement

In terms of movers, Merced, Calif. saw the biggest gain from a year ago, rising 105 spots to 63rd, thanks to a correction in one of the housing markets hit hardest by the bubble?s collapse. Among decliners, BP?s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico happened in 2010, but the decreased drilling activity in the Gulf persists and continues to hamper drilling-service centers like Lafayette, La., which dropped 82 places to 93rd.

The Milken Institute?s index ranks cities based on growth in jobs, wages and salaries, and technology output. It weighs those factors over a five-year span to account for varying business cycles and the latest year?s performance, and then adds 12-month job growth performance to account for recent momentum.

Cities in Texas measure strongly across all those categories, and its ?assertive recruiting? of out-of-state businesses adds to the state?s ?secret sauce,? but DeVol acknowledges that it also has another big chip in its favor: the state happens to be sitting on a gigantic pile of natural resources. While the Milken Institute touts the other sectors bolstering Texas economies, increased oil and gas exploration, in large part thanks to new drilling techniques, remains a crucial source of fuel for the state?s growth engine.

Samoans drop Friday from the calendar

Rachel Maddow reports on a peculiar switch in the calendar for Samoa as they move to the other side of the International Date Line and lose a Friday in order to be better aligned with their trading partners.

    By Alan Boyle

Just this once, Samoa is making Dec. 30 disappear.

It's the key step in the Pacific island nation's plan to move from the?eastern to the western side of the International Date Line and mesh its work week with two of its primary trading partners, New Zealand and Australia. The New Zealand territory of Tokelau is making the switch as well.

"In doing business with New Zealand and Australia, we're losing out on two working days a week," Stuff.co.nz quoted Samoan Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sailele as saying. "While it's Friday here, it's Saturday in New Zealand, and when we're at church Sunday, they're already conducting business in Sydney and Brisbane."

Samoa will go directly from 11:59 p.m. Thursday, through midnight to 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

"It hasn't been controversial," the editor of the Samoa Observer, Mata'afa Lesa, told me today. (Yes, definitely still today.) "People are realizing?when they sleep tomorrow night, they'll wake up on Saturday."

Hotel guests won't have to pay for an extra night, but employers will?be required?to pay workers for Friday. "For the business community, it's very difficult," Lesa said, "They'll be paying for a day that doesn't exist."

As for folks born on Dec. 30 ... well, this year they're in the same boat as Feb. 29 birthday babies.

    MSNBC

Samoa is on the eastern side of the International Date Line ... until Thursday night.

American Samoa, 100 miles to the east,?will not be making the switch. All this means that Samoa and Tokelau will be?among the first places in the?world?to see each day's sunrise. (Stuff.co.nz says the "first light honors" will belong to Fakaofo?in Tokelau, although Kiribati and Antarctica also have claims on the title.) Meanwhile, American Samoa will become known as the last?place to see each day's sunset. And if you want to celebrate your birthday or anniversary (or New Year's Eve, for that matter) two days in a row, you can just make the hourlong flight from Samoa to American Samoa.

This isn't the first step taken by the Samoan government to bring itself more in line with its bigger Pacific neighbors. Two years ago, drivers were ordered to switch from right-side to left-side?driving ? to reduce the cost of converting cars brought in from Australia and New Zealand.

It's also not the first time Samoa has switched sides on the calendar: Back in 1892, Samoans gained an extra day when?they?went from the west side of the imaginary Date Line to the east side. The king made the switch to please U.S. traders ??and to celebrate, he gave his subjects a double dose of the Fourth of July that year.

NBC's Lester Holt reports on Samoa's date shift for "Nightly News."

Update for 10:45 p.m. ET: Some of the comments suggest there's been?a bit of confusion over how many Fridays will be dropped from the calendar because of Samoa's shift from one side of the International Date Line to the other. It's just one. I've rewritten the headline to make that clearer.

Upon further review, Tim Tebow has one fewer interception, and the Buffalo Bills lost a franchise record. In a scoring change announced by the Bills on Wednesday, the third of Tebow?s four interceptions in a 40-14 loss last weekend is now being ruled a lost fumble. It happened midway through the fourth quarter when Tebow had the ball knocked loose by linebacker Chris Kelsay.

Japan moves into top three in FIFA Women's Rankings

Japan moved into the top three in the latest edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women's World Rankings, the highest position ever for the Nadeshiko.

The United States remains on top of the rankings but second-place Germany has closed to within five points of the Americans.

Brazil (4th, down 1) fell out of the top three for the first time since 2008 after a pair of draws against Canada and a loss to Denmark allowed world champions Japan to take advantage.

There was further movement inside the top 10 as England (8th, down 2) and Korea DPR (9th, down 1) both dropped, paving the way for France (6th, up 1) and Canada (7th, up 2) to climb.

Qualifying for Euro 2013 played a big role inside the top 50 with Poland (33rd, down 4) and Portugal (43rd, down 6) both slipping while other European nations enjoyed small improvements as Belarus (37th, up 1), Austria (38th, up 2) and Slovakia (39th, up 3) each moved up.

The next edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women's World Rankings will be released on Friday, March 16.

No Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update for Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate, Captivate, Vibrant, Epic 4G or Tab 7?

The Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate, Captivate, Vibrant and Epic 4G will not be getting an update to the latest version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). The original Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" model won't be updated either.

A blog post from Samsung reported that Samsung Galaxy SII smartphones don't have enough RAM or ROM to run Android 4.0 along with the Samsung TouchWiz UI.

Meanwhile, tech fans don't like the reason given for not updating the Samsung Galaxy S line, especially since the Samsung Nexus S, which has the same 1GHz processor and RAM as the Galaxy S line, was getting an update to ICS until it was halted.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich combines the Android?smartphone?OS with the tablet OS (Honeycomb from Google) and adds new features. See all?features in 4.0 Primer.

Samsung has been very slow to update its smartphone models after release. Last year, the update to Android 2.2 Froyo was called "Froyogate" because it took so long to be released. There were announcements in November 2010 and constant "coming soon" notices until finally updates were released in early 2011. After Samsung released the core code for the software update, the carriers then added their own software, which had to be tested with the update.

(AP) ? A house severely damaged in a Christmas morning fire that killed three children and two grandparents, one of whom worked as Santa Claus at Saks Fifth Avenue, has been torn down.

The building department determined that the $1.7 million house was unsafe and ordered it razed, Stamford fire chief Antonio Conte said.

The home's owner, advertising executive Madonna Badger, and her male acquaintance escaped from the fire. But Badger's three daughters ? a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins ? and her parents, who were visiting for the holiday, died, police said.

Neighbors said they awoke to the sound of screaming shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday and rushed outside to help, but could do nothing as flames devoured the large, turreted home.

Police said the male acquaintance who escaped the blaze with Badger was a contractor working on the home. He was also hospitalized but his condition was not released.

Interviews with them will be finished Monday, Conte said. He had no details on the investigation.

A spokeswoman for Saks Fifth Avenue confirmed in a statement that Badger's father, Lomer Johnson, had worked as a Santa this year at its flagship store in Manhattan.

"Mr. Johnson was Saks Fifth Avenue's beloved Santa, and we are heartbroken about this terrible tragedy," spokeswoman Julia Bently said.

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening. Her whereabouts Monday was unknown.

Property records show Badger bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house was situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

The lot where the house once stood was covered with charred debris and cordoned off by police with tape on Monday. Passers-by left bouquets, stuffed animals and candles nearby.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, a former mayor of Stamford, offered his condolences to Badger and her family in a statement and said her loss "defies explanation."

The fire was Stamford's deadliest since a 1987 blaze that also killed five people, Conte said.

    Opting to track, not treat, early prostate cancer -AARP{

WASHINGTON (AP) ? John Shoemaker visited six doctors in his quest to find the best treatment for his early stage prostate cancer ? and only the last one offered what made the most sense to the California man: Keep a close watch on the tumor and treat only if it starts to grow.

Very few men choose this active surveillance option. Yet Shoemaker is one of more than 100,000 men a year deemed candidates for it by a government panel. That's because their prostate cancer carries such a low risk of morphing into the kind that could kill.

The risk for them is so low, in fact, that specialists convened recently by the National Institutes of Health say it's time to strip the name "cancer" off these small, lazy tumors.

In the meantime, the panel wants more of those men offered the option of delaying treatment until regular check-ups show it's really needed. That endorsement promises to fuel efforts by the Prostate Cancer Foundation and a few other groups to spread the word to the newly diagnosed.

Shoemaker's journey shows how difficult that may be, from doctors who don't even bring it up to the fear factor.

"With prostate cancer, you hear the "C'' word, so to speak, and people freak out," says Shoemaker, 69, a businessman from Los Altos, Calif., who was intent on examining all his options.

Five years after his diagnosis ? and five biopsies plus numerous blood tests and ultrasound scans later ? Shoemaker's happy he found a surgeon who argued against immediate treatment. He's confident his prostate tumor hasn't grown, and avoided the pain and side effects of surgery or radiation.

Some 240,000 men a year in the U.S. are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Earlier this month, the NIH-appointed panel found that most have the low-risk kind, a legacy of using problematic PSA blood tests to screen healthy men for possible signs of this slow-growing cancer that will affect most men's prostates if they live long enough.

Yet 90 percent of such men choose immediate treatment such as surgery or radiation, risking serious and long-lasting side effects, such as impotence or incontinence, without good evidence about who will live longer as a result. One recent study tracked 731 men diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer for 10 years and found no difference in survival between those who had surgery and those who weren't treated unless they went on to develop cancer symptoms, an older option known as watchful waiting.

Active surveillance is much more aggressive than watchful waiting ? men get regular scans, blood tests and biopsies to check the tumor, although the NIH panel found the degree of monitoring can vary by medical center. Active surveillance is designed to monitor men closely enough that they can get curative treatment quickly if it looks like they'll need it, well before any symptoms would begin.

"It's not treatment versus no treatment; it's about timing of treatment," Shoemaker's physician, Dr. Peter Carroll of the University of California, San Francisco, told the NIH. He's a well-known prostate cancer surgeon who also leads one of the country's few large active-surveillance programs, tracking more than 900 men for over five years. Most are treatment-free so far, and none has gone on to die of prostate cancer.

Tens of thousands of protesters pressure Putin (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Tens of thousands of flag-waving and chanting protesters called Saturday for a disputed parliamentary election to be rerun and an end to Vladimir Putin's rule, increasing pressure on the Russian leader as he tries to win back the presidency.

The protesters shouted "Russia without Putin" and "New elections, New elections" as one speaker after another called for an end to Putin's 12-year domination of the country at the second big opposition rally in two weeks in central Moscow.

"Do you want Putin to return to the presidency?" novelist Boris Akunin asked from a large stage. Whistling and jeering, protesters chanted: "No!"

Witnesses said at least as many people turned out as at the last big Moscow rally on December 10 to protest against alleged vote-rigging in the December 4 election won by Putin's United Russia party.

Police said at least 28,000 attended the rally on Prospekt Sakharova (Sakharov Avenue), named after Soviet-era dissident Andrei Sakharov. But one of the organizers, liberal politician Vladimir Ryzhkov, put the crowd size at 120,000. Some climbed lamp-posts or trees to get a better view.

The big turnout is likely to encourage organizers to believe they can keep up the momentum of the biggest opposition demonstrations since Putin rose to power in 1999, although the prime minister seems intent on riding out the protests.

"I see enough people to take the Kremlin and the White House (government headquarters) right now!" anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny, who has emerged as the most inspirational of the opposition leaders, said to loud cheers.

"But we are a peaceful force, we won't do it - yet. But if the crooks and thieves continue trying to deceive us and lie to us, we will take (power) ourselves. It is ours!"

The organizers did not set a date for the next protest. Russia is about to start the 10-day New Year holiday when it would be hard to attract large numbers to rallies.

    PROTESTERS WAVE CONDOMS

The protesters were heartened Saturday by the Kremlin's human rights council saying a new election should be held, although it is only an advisory body whose recommendations are regularly ignored by Russia's leaders.

Many of the protesters wore white ribbons, the symbol of the protests, and others carried balloons and flags at the rally, which brought together liberals, nationalists, anarchists, environmentalists and urban youth on a bitterly cold day.

"The last protest made a huge impression and I want others to come and realize they can stand up for their right. We all know the election results and we all know how dishonest they were," said Andrei Chernyshov, a 22-year-old student.

President Dmitry Medvedev, who is stepping aside for Putin to return to the Kremlin after four years as prime minister, has promised electoral reforms to relax the Kremlin's grip on power.

But the opposition has rejected these conciliatory efforts and says Putin and Medvedev have ignored its key demand for a rerun of the poll, in which United Russia won a slim majority.

The protesters say United Russia benefited from widespread voting irregularities and international monitors said the vote was slanted in the ruling party's favor.

"The party of swindlers and thieves are the only ones who benefit from the preservation of the status quo," journalist Leonid Parfyonov said on a video message shown on a screen.

Protesters held signs saying: "For Russia without Putin."

Others waved condoms blown up like balloons, mocking Putin for saying earlier this month that he had initially mistaken the protesters' white ribbons, pinned to their chests, for condoms.

One protester carried a poster showing a doctored portrait of Putin with a condom wrapped around his head.

Dozens of police trucks lined the city's main ring road nearby and the police blocked off roads around the protest site, but they did not intervene.

There was no immediate reaction to the protests from Putin but state and other tightly controlled television channels provided coverage of the rally, without any direct mention of the criticism of the 59-year-old prime minister.

    PUTIN OUT OF TOUCH?

Putin is still expected to win the presidential election in March and return to the post he held from 2000 until 2008 - the opposition is divided, has no candidate to unite it and may struggle to keep protests going in mid-winter.

But there are growing doubts that Putin will win outright in the first round of voting. Many Russians say he is out of touch and some sources close to Russia's leadership suggest he has not grasped the seriousness of the protests.

The popularity of the former KGB spy, who has remained Russia's paramount leader, has dropped since he and Medvedev announced plans in September to swap jobs next year.

Many Russians said this showed a disregard for democracy and, although some still admire Putin for restoring order after the chaos that followed the Soviet Union's collapse, others fear his return would bring political and economic stagnation.

Putin has also alienated many people by suggesting that a large number of people at the protests, which were mainly organized on social networking sites, were paid to turn up and accused the United States of encouraging them.

"I didn't go to the first demonstration. I didn't think it was worth it. But seeing the news I realized how angry I was that my vote had been stolen," said Mikhail, a 46-year-old real estate salesman who declined to give his full name.

"You can feel that things are changing among people. There is solidarity among people. We're not afraid any more."

In Jakarta, it?s hip to like history

History tours are a part of a broader effort to get people to appreciate - and invest in - Jakarta's Old City.

    ? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.
Indonesian youths with a penchant for the past have injected new life into Jakarta?s Old City. Once home to the city?s main port and 17th-century Dutch settlements, the area known then as Batavia is now abuzz with teens who come to ride vintage bicycles, visit the history museum, or snap pictures in front of several crumbling colonial facades.

Groups such as the Sahabat Museum, an informal community of history aficionados, lead walking tours of the area. Sahabat Museum has organized nearly 100 tours around Indonesia since starting in 2003, but founder Ade Purnama says the Old City remains a favorite among youths.

?Because they live here, they grew up here, and they want to know the city?s history,? he says, noting that the last tour he organized there drew roughly 1,000 people.

Many participants come to enhance their knowledge of the country?s past. But Mr. Purnama sees the tours as part of a broader effort to get people to appreciate Jakarta.

Many buildings in the Old City remain in ruin. Their owners say they won?t invest in rehabilitation until the government enacts a widespread revitalization program.

In the meantime, Indonesians are finding other ways of bringing new life to the area. The Indonesian Heritage Society leads tours of historical sites, such as an old bank, a soy sauce factory, and the former homes of Dutch elite, as does a group called Cultural Explorer.

?This is an interesting way to learn about our city,? says Bulan Mendota, who was on a recent Sahabat Museum tour.

By learning about Jakarta, says Purnama, youths will also learn how to make it better.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N passes German legal muster despite Apple?s objections (Appolicious)

After an injunction in Germany that banned Samsung?s Galaxy Tab 10.1, the South Korean Android device maker has reworked the tablet?s design to meet a Dusseldorf court?s standards to avoid infringing on patents held by Apple for its iPad.

The new Galaxy Tab 10.1N, as the device is called, is different enough from the iPad that it?ll likely pass legal muster and won?t infringe, a German judge said today, according to a story from Ars Technica. The case isn?t quite shut yet, however ? the judge still has to rule on the device and Apple is working to get this new Galaxy Tab banned in Germany, as well.

Apple won an injunction in the country against Samsung?s original Galaxy Tab 10.1 by claiming Samsung had ?slavishly copied? Apple?s design for the iPad. The German court agreed, banning the sale of the device in the country because it ruled the look and feel of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 came too close to Apple?s patented designs. The answer to that injunction, the 10.1N, reworks that design slightly in order to make Samsung?s tablet more distinct. The device has been designed only for the German market; its most distinct new feature is the tablet?s metal rim, which wraps toward the front of the device in the 10.1N rather than lying flat behind the black bezel on the 10.1.

Apple still isn?t satisfied that Samsung?s tablet is significantly different enough from its iPad, however, and is working for another injunction against the device. As GigaOM points out, however, it?s probably unlikely that Apple will win a second injunction, given that the Dusseldorf judge said in a preliminary statement that Samsung has sufficiently moved the design of the 10.1N away from the iPad. That?s not the official ruling just yet, since there will be another hearing on the injunction, but Apple would probably have to come up with some compelling new arguments about how the device infringes on its iPad patents.

There?s no timeframe for the final ruling in Germany, but if the ruling goes down as expected, it could hurt Apple?s attempts to get similar bans against Samsung in other countries, like Australia. But for the time being, it seems as though Samsung has been successful in getting its Galaxy Tab 10.1 back to Germany, in some form. Now it?s just a matter of when the device might be able to go back on sale.
