Family Fun: Day Trips : Ideas for Women Home and Family Blog

Day Trips can be a lot of fun for families. They are cost effective as you don?t have to stay in a hotel and are easy on young children since they don?t always have to do a lot riding in the car. To start day tripping is not hard at? all. First you need to decide how far it is that you want to travel. It could be just a few miles down the road, the next town over, or if you live close enough maybe the next state over.

Next check out what sort of attractions there are that you and your family would enjoy. You don?t have to see them all, in fact that can create fun overload. Pick one or two and enjoy them. If there are several close by you can pick one a few times during the summer or even the year. Some good choices are always large amusement parks, centers. Because they are popular they are almost always crowded. Instead opt for places that are less likely to be full of people. Museums are always a good choice.

The idea is to be able to spend quality, fun time with your family without costing an arm and leg. So hit the road and enjoy!

Why NASA Grows Space Sunflowers

An unexpected passenger aboard the International Space Station is sick and could die.

"I am afraid that if something is not done we are going to lose Sunflower," U.S. astronaut and ISS resident Don Pettit wrote on his blog on May 5. "Our spacecraft is designed for animals so life can be a struggle for plants."

The sunflower in question, which Pettit has been trying to grow in the ISS, is afflicted with a fungal blight that has spotted its leaves. This ailment has afflicted other sunflowers grown in space: In 1982 in preparation for a space experiment called HEFLEX (see below), space sunflowers suffered a similar blight. Back then NASA adopted sterilization techniques, and the fungus did not reappear when the experiment flew in 1983.

NASA spokesmen say, however, that Pettit brought sunflower seeds to grow on his own time. Because it is not part of any official experiment, the sunflower was seemingly not protected by the previously learned sterilization. Nor is the crew equipped to save it. "The crew medical kit is designed for animals, not plants, so there are no medications for this disease," Pettit wrote. "Treating Sunflower with a disinfectant wipe that has an antibacterial agent called benzalkonium chloride. We do not know if this is going to work." The latest news from orbit is that the antibacterial wipes are helping.

Pettit?s outer-space botany isn?t just a weird experiment. Here are some of NASA?s pioneering projects that show its relationship to sunflowers is not a new phenomenon.

1. Moon material tests, Apollo 11 and 12

Hardware: Lunar Receiving Laboratory

Scientists were pretty sure the moon was sterile before astronauts went there. But it?s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to starting space plagues. So NASA set up a biosafety level 3 facility to test lunar materials? effect on various life forms on Earth. In it, various plant and animal cells were exposed to lunar soil, called regolith, to see if anything harmful was present. Sunflower cells were one of the organisms tested. Rather than being harmed, the cells showed higher than normal concentrations of fatty acids after exposure to the regolith. After Apollo 12, it became clear that the moon was, indeed, sterile.

2. Helianthus Flight Experiment (HEFLEX)

Hardware: SpaceLab 1, Space Shuttle Columbia

In 1983 the space shuttle ferried sunflower seedings into space to study nutation, where a plant?s tip slowly rotates downward as it grows, anchoring the plant as it screws into the soil. Charles Darwin discovered this in 1880, but he could never explain how the plant established the correct direction to grow. No one else could figure that out either. Some said the plants react to gravity. So what better way to test this theory than to grow sunflowers in space?

What followed was HEFLEX. Scientists examined sunflower seedlings for perfection and chose the best ones 12 hours before launch. After the launch, the sunflowers? growth was monitored via video cameras. The initial result: The seedlings rotated as they grew, despite the total absence of gravity. The research also recorded some microgravity experiments?the roots rotated in wider circles as gravity decreased. But gravity was not required to start the nutation, so Darwin?s mystery endures.

3. Zero-G Cellular Electrofusion

Hardware: Space Shuttle Columbia

Electrofusion?combining cells using electricity?is one way to create new plant hybrids. Take two cell types, zap them for 10 minutes or so, and the cytoplasmic contents will mingle. The combined cell can then be grown as any other cloned hybrid.

In 1993 scientists created sunflower hybrids in space using this method. Why? On Earth, the bridges between the fused cells are prone to collapse. The researchers figured that the absence of gravity would enable the hybrids to be more stable and give them a chance to grow. They were right, at least when it came to sunflowers: The fused protoplast pairs stabilized and grew normally in space and later on the ground. However, tobacco and digitalis plants subjected to the same experiment failed. No one knows why.

Notre Dame researcher's paper examines the biology of tumor-derived microvesicles

Notre Dame researcher's paper examines the biology of tumor-derived microvesicles [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 21-Jun-2012

A new paper by Crislyn D'Souza-Schorey, professor of biological sciences at the University of Notre Dame, discusses the biology of tumor-derived microvesicles and their clinical application as circulating biomarkers. Microvesicles are membrane-bound sacs released by tumor cells and can be detected in the body fluids of cancer patients.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the incidence of cancer will reach approximately 9 million deaths in 2015. The rising prevalence of the disease is a major factor that drives the growth of the oncology biomarkers market. Biomarkers can be defined as any biological, chemical or physical parameter that can be utilized as an indicator of physiological or disease status. Thus, biomarkers are useful in cancer screening and detection, drug design and also to boost the effectiveness of cancer care by allowing physicians to tailor therapies for individual patientsan approach known as personalized medicine.

The new paper discusses the potential of microvesicles to present a combination of disease and tissue-specific markers that would constitute a unique, specific and identifiable biosignature for individual cancers.

"As such, it would make their sampling over time a preferred method to monitor changes to the tumor in response to treatment, especially for tissues such as the ovary or pancreas, where repeated biopsies of these organs is impractical," D'Souza-Schorey said.

Profiling of microvesicles could form the basis of personalized, targeted cancer therapies, especially as more reliable and rapid profiling technologies become available.

"For example, certain markers like HER2/neu, in addition to being elevated in breast cancer, is also increased in a relatively smaller subset of other cancers such as ovarian cancer," D'Souza-Schorey said. "This latter group of patients would benefit from existing treatment strategies that target the HER2 receptor."

The approach could be advantageous over currently used approaches of profiling whole tissue or un-fractionated body fluid particularly if circulating microvesicles indeed concentrate molecular changes that occur in the tumor, as it would increase the sensitivity of detecting critical markers of cancer progression.

"One complicating factor, though, is the presence of shed vesicles from other non-tumor cell types also in direct contact with these body fluids," D'Souza-Schorey said. "Thus, equally significant is the development of strategies to selectively capture tumor-specific markers that separate from other shed vesicle populations."

In collaboration with local oncologists, the D'Souza-Schorey laboratory is investigating the potential of microvesicles as a cancer diagnostic platform, a project under the umbrella of Notre Dame's Advanced Diagnostics and Therapeutics Initiative. The lab's research on the biology of microvesicles and their roles in tumor progression is supported by the National Cancer Institute and the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

"Despite considerable strides, effort and investment in cancer biomarker research in the past decade, there are still more desirable outcomes, most especially enhanced sensitivity to enable early detection ," D'Souza-Schorey said. "An effective biomarker platform that will overcome these challenges would be paradigm shifting in cancer care."

The paper, which appears in the June 15 issue of the journal Genes and Development, was coauthored by Notre Dame graduate student James Clancy.

Do Zero Calorie Sports Drinks Work? | Davey Wavey Fitness

Athletes and avid exercisers often reach for sports drinks as a way to replenish and hydrate their bodies. To tap into new markets, most of the top brands ? including Powerade and Gatorade ? have low-calorie or even no-calorie product extensions.

But do these products actually work? Are they effective? Or is it just a marketing gimmick?

The answer is yes. They do work ? to some degree. But it?s also a marketing gimmick.

When we sweat, we tend to lose electrolytes. If your balance of electrolytes is off, you may experience weakness, twitching, fatigue, confusion or a handful of other hindering issues. Just like traditional sports drinks, the low or no-calorie alternatives contain the electrolytes your body needs during intense exercise. The resulting electrolyte balance can help athletes maximize their performance levels.

But if you?re looking for a low or no-calorie sports drink to boost your energy levels or restore depleted glycogen, think again. Very literally, we measure energy in calories. And by definition, a zero calorie sports drink contains zero energy. For this reason, there?s really something ridiculous about the trend towards reduced calorie sports beverages.

Moreover, our bodies need carbohydrates after exercise. If we don?t consume carbs through the food we eat or the beverages we drink, our bodies can breakdown hard-earned muscle to get the glycogen that?s needed. And low or no-calorie sports drinks, which often have little or no carbohydrates, won?t give your body the fuel it needs.

In my opinion, low or no-calorie beverages don?t deserve the label ?sports drinks.? In fact, I think the marketing can be misleading for consumers. While these low or no-calorie options provide some benefits, traditional sports drinks ? or even coconut water ? are a much smarter choice.

Garden Lights - Home Improvements

One of the great things about summer is being able to sit outside, have a Barbeque accompanied by a couple of glasses of vino, and then just relax on into the evening. Many people have different ways about enjoying such a lifestyle, some like to invite their friends over and get a bit of a party going, whilst others like to sit down and enjoy the company of their family, but I bet one thing everyone has in common is that they do not want the evening to stop when it gets dark, and that is why it is great to have garden lights fitted around the outside of your home.

The benefits of having Garden lights installed is firstly, it allows you to carry out the lifestyle we have mentioned above, but as well as this, it is a cheap and effective way of creating a beautiful home and generating a comforting ambience. Simple things such as lighting can really improve the aesthetics of a house, and it doesnt have to stop in the back garden. These lights can also be installed in the front garden and provide a welcoming vibe for your guests, or for when you have arrived home from work. Another major benefit is that it is a great safety measure, especially for households with lots of little ones running about who are looking to get up to all kinds of mischief. Another advantage is that you can make the most of your garden in the autumn and winter months when most people tend to neglect their garden and let the grass grow too long. But simply get a patio heater and couple cups of tea on the go and you can still sit outside and enjoy your garden in its full glory, which would be great with Guy Fawkes Night just around the corner.

For you environmentally friendly consumers out there, you will be pleased to know that you can buy a variety energy saving garden lights, such as the ones on offer from Sparks Direct. They offer a variety of energy saving and low voltage bulbs, and you also have the option mains voltage, high voltage and 3 phase. If you do opt for the higher powered bulbs, then simply remember to turn your lights off when they are not being used, and save our environment. If your lights are being powered by a mains socket, then simply purchase a digital timer and AC plug socket, where you will be able to set the time you wish your garden lights to be on and off.

Another great thing to remember is that you, the consumer, have such a great variety to choose from, that you are bound to find the right lights for your home. Some of the fitted lights that are available to you from Sparks Direct their choice of wall lights and walkover/step lights. Also, you can have spike lights scattered around the garden, which is often situated in the flowerbeds, to give your whole garden a beautiful glow. There are also rope lights, flood lights and ceiling lightings, so basically there is a light for every area of your garden. As well as a great range of lights comes a great range of styles. Some of the styles on offer to you are antique, contemporary and traditional and you also have the option of halogen, LED and high IP lights.

Whatever the reasons, make sure you make the most of your garden and give it the lighting it deserves.

Hospitalization May Be 'Tipping Point' for Alzheimer's Decline

TUESDAY, June 19 (HealthDay News) -- For people with Alzheimer's disease, a stay in the hospital could lead to accelerated mental decline and increase the risk of going into a nursing home or dying, according to a new study.

The investigators also found that those who experienced delirium, which is a state of heightened confusion or unusual mood or behavior, while in the hospital were even less likely to go back to the way things were after hospital discharge.

For the study, researchers followed nearly 800 people with mild Alzheimer's disease, about half of whom went to the hospital over the course of the study period due to falls, infections or other problems. Being hospitalized was associated with nearly twice the likelihood of having a poor outcome, including mental decline and death, and being delirious while hospitalized increased the risk by about 12 percent.

The study was published in the June 19 online issue of Annals of Internal Medicine.

Previous research found that hospitalization and delirium can speed mental slipping in older adults and patients with Alzheimer's, but the current study is the first to dissect the risks associated with having delirium on top of being hospitalized on outcomes including institutionalization and death, according to background information in the study.

"Delirium can be quite a problem for patients even with mild Alzheimer's disease, and preventing it may be a more effective treatment strategy than the current medications," said Dr. Tamara Fong, an assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and lead author of the study.

A number of steps can help prevent delirium in hospitalized patients, such as visiting with a family member or a familiar person, having eyeglasses or hearing aids available, getting out of bed for walks and not taking medications such as painkillers that can worsen confusion.

"There are some people who advocate keeping older people out of the hospital and treating them at home. This is an interesting [idea] because it does reduce the chance of delirium and reduces health care costs in other ways," Fong said.

People with Alzheimer's disease are three times as likely to spend time in the hospital. Between 20 percent and 40 percent of Alzheimer's patients are hospitalized each year for an average of about four days, the study authors noted.

The current study included 771 patients with mild Alzheimer's enrolled at Massachusetts Alzheimer's Disease Research Center where they were regularly evaluated for neurological function. Most of the patients were either living on their own or with family.

Among this group, 367 patients were hospitalized within 18 months of a research center visit and 194 of these patients had delirium during hospitalization. Delirium was the reason for hospitalization in only 4 percent of cases; the most common causes were fainting, falls, heart problems and abdominal pain.

The study authors found that 41 percent of the patients who were hospitalized with delirium had accelerated mental decline during the year following hospitalization, which they measured using a memory and concentration test. In comparison, only 23 percent of hospitalized patients without delirium and 26 percent of patients who were not hospitalized experienced increased mental decline during this time.

Whereas hospitalization on its own did not appear to drive up the risk of mental decline, delirium among patients who were hospitalized increased the risk by 20 percent.

Most Alzheimer's patients eventually have to be institutionalized, and many of them need help within five to 10 years of diagnosis, Fong said. Patients live between eight and 10 years on average after being diagnosed, and as Fong pointed out, usually die because of complications such as pneumonia.

In this study, the risk of going into a nursing home and dying in the year following hospitalization was higher for both groups of hospitalized patients. Those who developed delirium were 9.3 times more likely than nonhospitalized patients to be institutionalized and 5.4 times more likely to die, while those who were hospitalized and did not have delirium were 6.9 and 4.7 times more likely, respectively.

The researchers took into account the fact that hospitalized patients were generally older and sicker than patients who did not have to go to the hospital during the study.

However, the fact that the study involved only one research center and that the participants were predominantly white makes it harder to say the outcomes associated with hospitalization and delirium could apply to the overall population, Fong said.

"This study does a great job of saying, 'Look how serious this problem really is,'" said Dr. James Galvin, a professor of neurology and psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center, in New York City.

"Hospitalization is often the tipping point," he added. "The medical condition which may lead to hospitalizing may be a tipping point but clearly the hospital can be, too."

There is now a lot of focus on improving health in the home setting to avoid hospitalization and delirium, Galvin said. This includes getting the flu shot, maintaining good bladder and bowel hygiene to prevent urinary tract infections, and managing chronic pain medications that could lead to delirium.

Spain?s Struggling Telefonica Sells Half its China Unicom Stake

Spain-based telco Telefonica (MCE:TEF; NYSE:TEF) has been struggling in line with the bailed-out Spanish economy of late, and has announced that it will sell half of its valuable stake in China Unicom (NYSE:CHU; HKG:0762) in order to slash its debts.

The sale of 1.07 billion China Unicom shares for HK$11 billion ($1.4 billion) will bring down Telefonica?s stake in Unicom ? which has China?s second-largest 3G user-base ? to 5 percent. The transaction should be completed by the end of July, and comes with a promise that the Spanish firm will not sell any more of its stake in the next 12 months. Unicom?s state-owned parent China United Network Communications Group will buy the whole of the stake back at 22 percent less than it?s valued on Telefonica?s books.

Unicom shares climbed 6.6 percent on news of the transaction yesterday, while Telefonica plunged 4.23 percent on the NYSE. China Unicom already owns 1.37 percent of Telefonica SA.

Justin Bieber Takes Selena Gomez On Romantic Helicopter Ride

Tomorrow, catch 'Bieber Live,' where Justin will perform and chat with Sway at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!

Justin Bieber headed up to Canada over the weekend to attend Sunday's MuchMusic Video Awards. While he was in his native country, he decided to do something really romantic for lady love Selena Gomez.

A day before he and Gomez appeared on the awards show, Justin rented a helicopter and flew around Toronto between rehearsals. During the ride, he took her to his hometown of Stratford, Ontario, People.com reported. A source added that it was "a relaxing and romantic break from work" and that "they were very excited."

Sunday was just as exciting for Bieber as he took home two prizes for Best International Video of the Year by a Canadian for "Boyfriend" and UR Fave Artist. The teen also hit the stage to perform "Boyfriend" and "All Around the World," from his album Believe, out Tuesday. Be sure to tune in on Tuesday for MTV's "Bieber Live," where Justin will dish about his new album at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Bieber recently gushed about his girlfriend to Fabulous magazine, but noted that he also has love for the other ladies in his life: his fans.

"I never like to throw it in my fans' faces. I love my fans and I'd never want to do that to them," he said of keeping a low profile with Selena. "It's my private life and I like to keep that separate. I don't have many things that I get to myself but that's one thing. I'm very happy, and I know my fans just want to be happy for me."

Bieber and Gomez's relationship first became public in January 2011 when they were spotted on vacation together in St. Lucia. But in the 18 months since they were photographed on that romantic trip, they haven't been shy about their love for each other.

"My first kiss with Selena was the best of my life. It was in the car. It was scary and spontaneous and it was just awesome," he recalled. "What does love feel like? It feels good. If you're really in love, then you should get butterflies — butterflies and happiness. That's how I feel anyway."

Bieber sings plenty about love on his June 19 album, Believe. And he'll not only discuss the release, but also perform during "Bieber Live" on MTV tomorrow.

Don't miss "Bieber Live" on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, followed by "MTV First: Katy Perry" at 7:53 p.m., when Katy will debut her "Wide Awake" music video.

Ask Engadget: best 'invincible' point-and-shoot camera?

Ask Engadget best invincible pointandshoot camera

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Mark, who's in the market for a heavy-duty camera. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"Back in 2009, you asked what the best rugged, waterproof point-and-shoot camera was. I'm looking for the same thing now and wondered if the readers had any recommendations. I'm not interested in a normal point-and-shoot with a waterproof case, I want something that's waterproof, sandproof, shockproof, that's idiot-proof, with a reasonable optical zoom and with minimal shutter lag. Hope someone can help! Thanks."

Firstly, thank you for doing your homework! It's reasonable that we should swing past this topic again after three years, so what about it dear friends? A point-and-shoot you'd be happy to take dirt biking, snorkeling and won't break when you drop it. Any you've bought yourself that's withstood your lifestyle, have you found any that you'd warn us away from? Let us know in the comments below.

PSA: Dropbox scraps Public folders July 31st, your sharing stays intact

Dropbox for Android

Would-be Dropbox users who want to lean on the cloud storage service's Public folder, heads-up: when July comes to a close, new accounts won't get that common storage pool. That's not to say it's the end of sharing, however. The company's recent sharing link support is still very much in effect to let groups share files or whole folders between each other. Some will point out that it's still not a direct substitute, which is true; if you're not already packing your virtual bags for a trip to Google Drive for that reason, just remember that grandfathered Public folders will carry on for the foreseeable future.

History In the Making: This Pipe-Twisting Robot Is Bender's Great-Great-Great-Grandfather [Video]

If Futurama has taught me anything, it's that one day factory robots will wander the streets drinking, swearing, and occasionally bending pieces of metal for a living. But that's still a long ways off, as this video of a comparatively primitive pipe-bending bot illustrates. More »

Cornwall College praised by inspectors

Cornwall College praised by inspectors

Cornwall College has been praised for the quality of its higher education courses by the Quality Assurance Agency, the Ofsted for universities and colleges.

The outcome of the college?s Integrated Quality and Enhancement Review was published on June 6. The assessment focuses on academic standards and quality of learning, both of which the body said it had ?confidence? in; the highest of three grades.

It was also evaluated on its ability to provide public information about itself, which the QAA said was ?reliable?, also the highest ruling.

There was praise for the college?s strong employer links, which help students gain work-based and work-related skills and knowledge.

Students said that work-related opportunities at the college boosted their employability and that members of staff work in the industry relevant to the courses they lecture on.

The college?s support for academic activity by staff and the ?impressive output of research? was also highlighted. Dave Linnell, principal of Cornwall College, said: ?We?ve set our fees for higher education courses at ?6,000 a year for those starting in September 2012 which is considerably lower than many of the region?s establishments.

This was a conscious decision to offer as many people as possible the chance to gain a high quality university-level qualification. The report from the QAA proves that our standards match or exceed other institutions.

?We have been given the highest grading possible in the key areas of academic standards and learning opportunities which reflects our ability to deliver the best possible education.?

Cornwall College is running a university courses open day on Friday, June 15, at its campuses in Camborne, Newquay, St Austell and Saltash to give prospective students a taste of student life.

Places must be booked in advance at www.cornwall.ac.uk or by calling 0845 2232567 for more details.

Nokia: Microsoft is giving us 'specific support' to compete with Android at even lower prices

Nokia Lumia 610 and 800

Nokia made mention of a broader Lumia phone range coming as part of its major strategy shakeup, but it wasn't clear just where the Windows Phone line was heading. During a call discussing the nitty-gritty of the strategy shift, though, the company made clear that it was swinging towards devices cheaper than the Lumia 610 -- much cheaper. Plans had already been underway to drop the price lower, but Microsoft had given "specific support" to get to lower prices than Nokia "had a sight to." Executives dropped hints that "important catalyst dates" in Microsoft's Windows Phone timetable were instrumental to lower prices; we've got a few ideas as to what Nokia might mean. The cost-cutting was considered vital to competing with the very low-cost Android smartphones that thrive in countries like China, as Nokia wasn't about to throw a mix of basic Symbian phones and Windows Phones against a pure smartphone platform like Google's. Along with narrowing the focus in product launches to fewer countries but more ambitious plans -- think of AT&T's Lumia 900 launch shebang -- Finland's phone giant thinks it can go toe-to-toe with Android-using rivals that can often compete solely on cost.

Global Energy Use By Source - Coal Wins Again

The 2012 BP Statistical Review, covering 2011 world energy data, has been released. With global oil production roughly flat for a seventh year, coal once again gained global share of total primary energy consumption. World consumption of coal rose 5.4% in 2011, as oil consumption eked out a very small, 0.7% gain. As for other sources, nuclear use fell notably by -4.3%. And world natural gas consumption was restrained to a 2.2% advance, owing to a large retreat in European demand. Finally, while starting from a small position, both hydropower and renewables (biofuels, solar, wind) once again made very strong gains.

As a result, coal?s share of primary energy consumption has now risen above 30%, as coal continues its relentless attack on oil?s market share. Nuclear?s share falls below 5%, while natural gas and hydropower maintained their positions compared to 2010.
