Financial Analysis as a Tool to Drive Profitability It?s not uncommon for a business manager or owner to perform well in many of the critical disciplines needed to succeed in business, but
still fall short on making a profit or the income they need to survive. It?s particularly frustrating
for a small business owner who puts their heart and soul into their business. They see it grow
with customers who love their service, but then their business fails (or nearly fails) because they are unable to pay themselves the income they require. Adding to the frustration is knowing they could earn that needed income working for someone else.

Financial analysis is an important topic that helps business managers and owners gain a deeper understanding of how their business is performing. It provides insights not available by looking at the bank statement, reviewing end of year tax statements, or reviewing corporate income statements. It represents a wide range of analyses useful in understanding different facets of the performance of the business. Examples of financial analysis may include: Income Statement Analysis, Cash Flow Analysis, Business Unit Profitability, Product Profitability, Customer Profitability, Geographic Profitability, Return on Investment (ROI) and Sales Force Analysis. Financial analysis and modeling typically includes a look at both revenue and expenses and provides management with insights that enable informed decision making. Individually and together, these insights can make a dramatic difference in the income of the business.

Lots of these games seemed to be straight-up ports of mobile versions. At the very least, these games might be easy ways to buff your gamerscore.

SEAL book raises questions about bin Laden's death

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.

Bin Laden apparently was hit in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Mark Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in "No Easy Day." The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a "point man" going up the stairs. "Less than five steps" from top of the stairs, he heard "suppressed" gunfire: "BOP. BOP." The point man had seen a "man peeking out of the door" on the right side of the hallway

Bissonnette writes that bin Laden ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the terrorist crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner and he and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sites on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless.

In the account related by administration officials after the raid in Pakistan, the SEALs shot bin Laden only after he ducked back into the bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor would not comment on the apparent contradiction late Tuesday.

"No Easy Day" was due out on Sept. 11, but Dutton announced the book would be available a week early on Sept. 4 because of a surge of orders due to advance publicity that drove the book to the top of the Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com best-seller lists.

The Associated Press purchased a copy of the book Tuesday.

In another possibly uncomfortable revelation for U.S. officials who say bin Laden's body was treated with dignity before being given a full Muslim burial at sea, the author reveals that in the cramped helicopter flight out of the compound, one of the SEALs named "Walt" was sitting on bin Laden's chest as the body lay at the author's feet in the middle of the cabin.

Bissonnette also writes disparagingly that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the May 2011 raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid.

But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

Bissonnette writes less flatteringly of meeting Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the headquarters of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment after the raid. He says Biden told "lame jokes" no one understood, reminding him of "someone's drunken uncle at Christmas dinner."

Beyond such embarrassing observations, U.S. officials fear the book may include classified information, as it did not undergo the formal review required by the Pentagon for works published by former or current Defense Department employees.

Officials from the Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information and could take legal action against the author.

In a statement provided to The Associated Press, the author says he does "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to The Associated Press.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

U.S. Open tennis official pleads not guilty in husband's murder

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A 70-year-old professional tennis official arrested in New York ahead of the U.S. Open on charges she bludgeoned her elderly husband to death with a coffee mug pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

During a brief hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court, a commissioner agreed to lower bail for lineswoman Lois Ann Goodman from $1 million to $500,000, citing her age and ties to the community.

Commissioner Mitchell Block ordered Goodman, who was returned to Los Angeles from New York last week following her arrest, back to court on October 3 for a preliminary hearing in the case, at which time a judge will determine if there is enough evidence to put her on trial.

The veteran tennis official is charged with a single count of murder in the April 17 death of her 80-year-old husband, Alan Goodman, at the couple's home in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles. She faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.

According to Los Angeles police, the death of Goodman's husband was ruled a homicide on August 2, and by the time charges were brought against Goodman, she had left for New York to officiate at the U.S. Open.

Police say it was Goodman who reported her husband's death, telling authorities she found him in their home with no sign of forced entry and surmised he had suffered a heart attack and fallen down a set of stairs.

But a search of the home turned up the broken coffee mug that roughly matched contusions on Alan Goodman's head, authorities say.

During the court hearing, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Lisa Tanner said Alan Goodman had multiple lacerations and slivers of porcelain in his skull. Tanner said Lois Goodman left the scene to get a manicure following the crime.

Defense attorney Alison Triessl told reporters outside court that family members were attempting to raise the $500,000 bail for Goodman and were "adamant" that she was innocent of murder.

Goodman is well known in tennis circles and had worked at the annual U.S. Open Tennis Championships tournament for at least the past 10 years, mainly as a line judge, according to the U.S. Tennis Association.

Haley Barbour on Obama: ?He?s a one percenter?

TAMPA -- Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour was holding court at a private party before the Republican National Committee Sunday, where he called President Barack Obama "a one percenter," and urged a group of conservative bloggers to rally behind Mitt Romney even though he's "not perfect."

"We've got two guys running for president, by the way, who are both very rich. Each one of them is in the top one percent in the United States." Barbour said during an event for the National Bloggers Club in Tampa. "Both of them are one percenters. And in fairness, both of them made their own money. Romney made his by winning the confidence of people who invested their money. ?Obama made his money writing two books about himself. He's a one percenter!...Which one do you figure is going to do a better job of getting our economy going in the right direction?"

Indeed, both men are in the "top one percent" of income earners, although Romney's net worth is about 20 times greater than Obama's. Romney and Obama are worth around $200 million and $12 million, respectively.

During his talk, Barbour also argued that conservatives need to look passed Romney's moderate record as governor of Massachusetts.

"Mitt Romney's not as conservative as I am. It's a fact," Barbour said. "But the difference between him and Obama in terms of their vision, their plan, their policies, their belief in the history and the fundamental principles of America are the greatest difference of any two presidential candidates in my lifetime. ?It behooves us to make sure Romney wins."

Study questions recommendation to discontinue LABA therapy in asthma patients

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? An extensive literature review and analysis of five clinical trials suggests that discontinuing long-acting ?2-agonist (LABA) therapy in adults and older children who have asthma that is controlled with a combination of inhaled corticosteroids and LABAs may be associated with increased asthma-related impairment, according to a report published in Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication released Aug. 27.

Thomas Casale, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of Allergy/Immunology, Creighton University, served as a primary author of the paper. Currently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that once asthma is controlled, LABA be withdrawn because of safety concerns.

"Our evidence suggests that such an action could result in increased asthma-associated impairment. At a minimum there is a lack of studies evaluating the issue," said Casale.

A LABA step-off regimen appeared to increase asthma impairment, with worse Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire scores; worse Asthma Control Questionnaire scores; and fewer symptom-free days, according to study results.

Authors recognize that there is a FDA mandate for LABA safety studies by manufacturers of these agents but results won't be available for about five years.

"Our analysis supports the positive effects of LABAs for achieving and maintaining asthma control," Casale added.

Flags to fly at half-staff for Neil Armstrong

The astronaut who became the first man to walk on the moon has died at the age of 82. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports on tributes for him and the legacy he left behind.

By Alan Boyle

U.S. flags will be flying at half-staff around the world "as a mark of respect for the memory of Neil Armstrong," the first man to walk on the moon, President Barack Obama proclaimed today.

The half-staff tribute will take place on the day of Armstrong's burial and last until sunset. But exactly which day will that be? Friday is the likeliest day ??but the plans for memorials are still taking shape, two days after Armstrong died of complications from heart surgery at the age of 82.

Today, NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs tweeted that a private, family memorial service would take place on Friday in Cincinnati, near the Armstrong family home in Indian Hill, Ohio. The Associated Press also said services would be held Friday. U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican who's a friend of the family, is due to give the eulogy, AP reported.

NASA Headquarters in Washington said that the details for the private as well as public memorial services were still in flux. "No details yet for a public memorial," Jacobs wrote.

Meanwhile, formal and informal memorials to the first moonwalker are proliferating. The Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio, where Armstrong was born, is planning a memorial tribute on Wednesday night.

NASA has set up a "Share Your Thoughts" website where condolences can be left. There's also a "Wink at the Moon Night" website, sparked by the Armstrong family's request to look at the moon, "think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink." The website is part of a campaign to make Aug. 25, the date of Armstrong's death, an annual Wink at the Moon Night.

Photoillustration by Jason Major via Twitter

NBC News' Cape Canaveral correspondent, Jay Barbree, told me in an email that the thought behind the request for winks was clear: "The family means that's where he'll be ??on the moon."

As I gave a wink last Saturday night, it struck me that the moon was already flying at half-staff, just one day after its first-quarter phase. Friday's full moon will be the second full moon of the month, and thus will mark a rare "blue moon." Armstrong's passing will surely make this moon as blue as it can be.

Tributes are continuing to stream in from VIPs. Here are a few that have crossed our desk since Saturday:

Robert Zubrin, president, Mars Society: "Neil Armstrong was a patriot and a pioneer. ?In every way he was an exemplar of the great human spirit which seeks to go where no one has gone, to know what has never been known, to do what has never been done.? His?life's story?calls to all of us to rise to our own higher natures, just as his immortal words when first setting foot on our neighbor world challenge us.? Will the Apollo 11 mission ultimately be remembered as a 'giant leap for mankind,' the first step in opening an infinite frontier?? Or will it recede into history as merely a grand stunt that led nowhere?? The answer to that question is up to us.? Let us therefore reflect on this great and good man's life, and resolve to?find and summon to action?the Neil Armstrong within?ourselves, so that he, and the nation that dared with him, did not dare in vain."

Frank DiBello, president, Space Florida: "Although Neil Armstrong had grown disillusioned with the debate, uncertainty and acrimony in Washington surrounding the post-shuttle direction of NASA, he remained a passionate and compelling advocate of the human exploration of space. We owe it to his memory to continue that quest. Indeed, our memory of this grand achievement is our collective heritage, and is our single most enduring symbol of American exceptionalism."

Bill Nye (the Science Guy), CEO, Planetary Society: "For people everywhere, Neil Armstrong was a hero, I think, not just because he did his dangerous job successfully, but because he was so matter-of-fact about his profession. It was a day at his office. We all owe him a debt. Just think how the word would be different, if he had crashed on the moon, or not managed to return from the moon, or missed the Earth on his way back. None of us would think of our place in the cosmos, our place in space differently.?Neil Armstrong raised the expectations, the hopes and dreams, of every human on Earth. Thanks to him, we all believe that humans can achieve great things -- that we can learn about our place among the stars -- that we can all reach up and out -- that we can fly, and change the world. It turns out, yours was a pretty big step after all. Thank you, sir." [Full statement]

Hugh Downs, former host of ABC's "20/20" and chairman of the National Space Society's Board of Governors:?"News of Neil Armstrong's passing is so shocking that there is no way it can be absorbed right away as reality. His position in history is deeper than that of any known discoverer or explorer in the history of this planet. As the first human to land on any world outside the Earth, and probably the first living creature of any sort to come from the Earth and reach the Moon, his legacy will be safe as long as intelligent life survives in this corner of the cosmos." [Full statement]

Neil deGrasse Tyson, director, Hayden Planetarium, via Twitter: "'Men Walk On Moon'?? The only positive event in the last 50 years for which everyone remembers where they were when it happened. ... Farewell, my friend. And now, perhaps more than ever, I bid you godspeed. ... The first crewed spacecraft to Mars should be named the 'Armstrong.' That works on so many levels."

Win McNamee / Getty Images

A tribute to Ohio-born astronaut Neil Armstrong is displayed on stage at the Tampa Bay Times Forum on Sunday. The tribute was created during the run-up to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

More about Neil Armstrong's life and legacy:

When Neil Armstrong had his heart surgery earlier this month, we collected get-well wishes and passed them along to the family via NBC's Jay Barbree. I can't promise that we'll be able to do likewise this time around, but please feel free to leave your condolences as comments below.

What Is Self Improvement? 8 Tips for Self Improvement |

They say that there is no better way to help you than through yourself, and this leads to the question what is self improvement? Also known as self help, self improvement refers to things that you can do to make your life better. It involves knowing your weakness and trying to work on them. This can be your attitude towards life and others, physical outlook or emotional health. By improving yourself you will have an opportunity to enjoy your life to the fullest. Check out some tips which you can use to make yourself better.

Tip #1: Begin the day well

Beginning the day with a positive attitude can help you to stay positive throughout the day. You should therefore make it a rule to start your day in a positive way. Wake up early and do something constructive such as jogging or mediation before leaving for work or school. If you are a student, you can wake up early to study when the mind is still fresh. So you got your first answer to what is self improvement; have a good start!

Tip #2: Have a positive attitude

There is a saying that when you start thinking positively you will start seeing positive outcomes in your life. It is true that what we think is what we are. You should therefore try to find something positive about every situation even when it seems impossible. Instead of cursing and blaming others because we do not have a car, thank God that you have legs to walk to job. Instead of complaining that we do not live in a mansion, how about thanking our families for providing a roof over our head? Appreciating the small things in life is the key to achieving big thins.

Tip #3: Keep positive company

The company we keep plays a key role in our thoughts. If you are always in the company of people who are always complaining and criticizing you are likely to become like them. No wonder the saying ?birds of a feather flock together?. You should therefore watch your company at all times.

Tip #4: Have goals

You must know what you want to achieve in order to help yourself. We should set realistic goals especially when it comes to our financial status. Once you have your goals you will need to work hard and be disciplined in order to achieve them. In addition, you can motivate yourself by rewarding your efforts.

Tip #5: Take a break

Being a workaholic is not a bad thing, but it is good to take a short break once in a while. This will give your body time to relax so when you go back to work you will have a clear mind. You can take breaks in between working sessions and have a chat with your colleagues. Alternatively, you can go for a short holiday on a weekend.

Tip #6: Overcome your fears

The worst thing you can do to yourself is not to do something because you are afraid. It is true that overcoming your fears sets a platform for success. Once you have overcome your fears there will be no stopping you.

Tip #7: Give to others

Those who give to others always receive back. Giving does not always to be in form of money. We can be polite to our colleagues, smile at others and compliment them when they do a good job. You will be surprised at how people can change and be willing to help when you show them love.

Tip #8: Always learn from your past

There is no better answer to what is self improvement and how to achieve it than by learning from our past mistakes. A man who does not let his past experiences discourage him has a better chance of improving than one who gives up after the first trial. This is because when you do something several times you will know what to avoid and what to do next time and this creates room for improvement. We can therefore say that the best way to help ourselves is to never repeat our past mistakes.

You have to make a decision that you want to change and work towards changing your situation in order to become a better person. Now you have your answer to the question ?what is self improvement??

Now that you know what self improvement is, it?s time that you learned some true self-improvement lessons. If you want to unlock your hidden potential and discover a side of yourself that you never knew existed then visit my Enlightenment Gateway website.

Can lighting really strike twice? Just ask Eve, whose husband walks out on her in the middle of a garage sale.

Eve's beloved Ivan died thirteen years ago in an automobile accident. Her charming, boyish Chuck has taken a different exit out of her life: hopping into his car in the middle of a garage sale with no forewarning and departing their formerly happy upstate New York home for points unknown. Now Eve's a boat adrift, subsisting on a heartbreak diet of rue, disappointment, and woe-left alone to care for Ivan's brilliant teenaged son, Marcus, and Chuck's precocious, pragmatic nine-year-old daughter, Noni, while contending with Charlotte, Eve's acerbic mother, who's come north to "help" but hinders instead.

But life ultimately must go on, with its highs and lows, its traumas and holidays, and well-meaning, if eccentric, friends. A house and a heart in disrepair are painful burdens for a passionate woman who's still in her prime. And while learning to cope with the large and small tragedies that each passing day brings, Eve might end up discovering that she's gained much more than she's lost.

Anything from as simple as running an email campaign to as complex as getting the top ten ranking on Google search engine takes into focus some vital insight to avoid becoming the next internet marketing casualty. If you can as much as turn on your computer and check your email, then y o u a r e in business.

But did you know that using organic and paid search engine e in business marketing can explode your web site traffic overnight!Literally!

First, let?s familiarize ourselves with a few frequently used terms used by webmasters.

The two often repeated terms around the SEO circles are ?first-time visitors and ?repeat visitors?. Fairly self-explanatory, right?

Ok, now, believe it or not, according to Search Engine Journal (a web site that focuses on Search Engine News on SEO & Search Marketing) after checking our email, searching the World Wide Web is the next reason we come online! Mmmm, interesting fact.

People come online for all sorts of reasons. For example, according to Pew Internet & American Life Project, ?60 million Americans say that the internet helped them make big decisions or negotiate their way through major episodes in their lives.? They also say that 73% of adult Americans are either shopping, pursuing hobbies or engaging in personal interest online.

According to Internet World Stats, the worldwide internet community has reached a staggering 1 billion users! Whew! that looks like the whole Indian population.

Here?s a breakout:

Asia 400 Million (36%)Europe 300 Million (28%)North America 200 Million (21%)Latin America/Caribbean 100 Million (9%)Africa accounts for 30 Million (3%)Middle East 20 Million (2%)Oceania/Australia 18 Million (1.8%)

With that kind of statistics above, are you now seeing what your bank account would look like if your were sitting right at the top 10 search results to meet these internet users with some solution to their problem? I think you got the picture now.

Ok, let us now see which major search engines are commonly used by our 1 billion users. Google is by far the search authority. In fact, these days Google has become the search mecca on the internet as everybody likes to ?google? their way to finding answers on the online. Yahoo! boasts second place followed of course by MSN with its new search page. The long and short is that Google out-class both competitors by leaps and bounds.

So how do I go about getting a traffic jam at my web site?

Well, this is where you have to prepare for some dedication and commitment I mentioned earlier in my preamble. Don?t panic here; if you can follow simple instructions and carry them out well, you are on track. A great place to begin this exciting adventure is by using href=?http://wordtracker.com? target=?_blank?>Wordtracker to do great keyword research. Keywords are basically the words you would type into the Google search engine to find for instance, ?great caribbean packages? where that exact phrase is your keyword to find just that, ?great vacation packages?. Pretty simple, right? I love this amazing tool. It?s more that just merely a wordtracker. it?s a powerful research tool.

BUT, bear in mind that millions of websites are online fiercely competing for top spots using, as mentioned earlier, organic and paid search engin e in business marketing optimization, which means that you would have to find the most competitive keyword/s in your niche area to launch an all out attack and land your web site among the top 10 rankings.

There are three main strategies for competing consistently at the top 10 position.

They include:

1) Placing your best keywords at strategic positions on your web page. Hint: your web site address is a great place to start and putting <h1></h> around your title is will bribe the ?spider? to take a closer look at your keword.

2) Giving the search engine ?crawlers? or ?spiders? one of their favourite meals to come hunt you down. By this I am referring to something as simple and yet effective as adding your web site to relevant directories such as dmoz.org for example.

3) Building an empire of relevant inbound links (links pointing from other sites back to your site) is a smart way to go. Think about writing content rich articles for your audience as one great way to do this. Articlemarketer.com, ideamarketers.com are greet places to publish articles, among many others of course.

Pay-per-click or Sponsored search engines optimization can significantly enhance your internet success, but, if used foolishly, they can dry up your bank account! No kidding, pay-per-click campaigns can either leave you whistling all the way to the bank or making an appointment with your mortgagor to consider refinancing your loan! Ok,that?s taking it a bit too far but there are dos and don?ts critical to your success.

Like anything else, you have to first determine a budget. Would you jump in your car/truck, drive to the supermarket, grab the biggest trolley, pack it navel high without first ensuring that you have enough funds to pay for the goods. So, how do you determine your pay-per-click budget? Not that difficult at all. A nice place to strt testing your ad with a mini budget is href=?http://kanoodle.com? target=?_blank?>Kanoodle.

I won?t bother to burden you with that ?next big thing? here and now. Instead, I will give you some time to digest the foregoing and continue from here another time. In the meantime, take it from the expert, your can surviv e in business if you make up your mind to hang in there and copy the exact strategies the online gurus have used to capitalize on the E in business.

(Oh by E I mean extras of course!)

(Please feel free to use this article leaving the biography and byline as is in your ezines, email campaigns etc,. Please put yourself ?in the other man?s shoes? and observe Copright

How To Get Rid Of Heartburn Fast Naturally At Home

Heartburn occurs through acid reflux. Here's how to get rid of heartburn fast naturally and at home including sleeping postures to avoid chest pains caused by acid reflux in the esophagus.

What causes heartburn?

Acid in the stomach find their way up the esophagus causing the burning sensation starting from the chest area up to the neck. Although their are different contents that go up from the stomach when we lie down, it was learned that only the acid part of it particularly causes the chest pain and discomfort. Other things that trigger the building up of those acids include caffeine drinks, greasy foods, alcohol, soar substance and other external acidic substance we take including medicines.

Simple ways to get rid of heartburn fast

The first measure to consider while contemplating how to get rid of heartburn is taking advantage of the gravitational force. Spend 20 to 30 mins standing upright making some movement to get the acid run down from the esophagus to the stomach. Drink alot of water to increase metabolism and improve the flow of blood around the system.

? Take liquid vapourized milk to get rid of heartburn fast. Other types of milk contain much fat and protein which may trigger the acid reflux by producing more acid in the stomach. Do not drink water for 30 minutes in order to get the substance at work.

? Mix baking soda with substantial amount of water. A tablespoon of baking soda into 1 litre of water. And how does this mixture helps to get rid of heartburn? It neutralizes the acid in less than 5 minutes.

Home remedies to get rid of heartburn

If you've tried the above simple heartburn treatment to no avail you might be suffering from heartburn caused by lack of stomach acid. So we are going to look at how to get rid of heartburn by introducing substances into the stomach.

? ACV or white vinegar can be taken, 1 to 2 spoon. It is mostly effective when taken on empty stomach if you want to get rid of heartburn permanently. Other natural fruits include mango, banana, and sweet lemon.

? Take sweets like Tom Tom or any type of chewing gums. Drinking herbal was also used to get rid of heartburn, especially the mild. This should be warm and to be taken immediately after eating to stop the acid reflux. A good alternative is ice cream.

How to get rid of heartburn - things to avoid

? While exercise and massaging is very important, you should also avoid much pressure on the stomach to avoid acid reflux. Lying on the stomach and weight lifting can also contribute, so avoid them.

? Stop drinking caffeinated drink as soon as you recognize pains in the chest area. Particularly for pregnant women looking for how to get rid of heartburn, coffee can trigger the burning sensation. Have more water.

? Beverages and spicy foods contribute to the buildup of acid in the stomach. If you must eat those foods, make sure to do atleast 4 hours before you lie down.

? If you're looking for how to get rid of heartburn naturally, you defintely need to reduce stress, employ slow eating habit, eat less fat and avoid smoking.

Other measures to consider.
Not all heartburn occurs by lack of acid in the stomach or the introduction of it in the esophagus. Some burning sensations happen due to the reaction of the esophagus to antibiotics and painkillers. The reliable way to get rid of heartburn caused by irritation is by over the counter pills, thus your doctor's advice would be of great value.

For a long time, people searching for how to get rid of heartburn make tea using fennel seed. After, they create and swallow enough saliva which sooth the burning by neutralizing the stomach acid. Vegetable juice is also recommended even for indigestion.

U.S. court strikes down graphic warnings on cigarettes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday struck down a law that requires tobacco companies to use graphic health warnings, such as of a man exhaling smoke through a hole in his throat.

The 2-1 decision by the court in Washington, D.C., contradicts another appeals court's ruling in a similar case earlier this year, setting up the possibility the U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in on the dispute.

The court's majority in the latest ruling found the label requirement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration violated corporate speech rights.

"This case raises novel questions about the scope of the government's authority to force the manufacturer of a product to go beyond making purely factual and accurate commercial disclosures and undermine its own economic interest -- in this case, by making 'every single pack of cigarettes in the country mini billboard' for the government's anti-smoking message," wrote Judge Janice Rogers Brown of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

The FDA "has not provided a shred of evidence" showing that the graphic labels would reduce smoking, Brown added.

Five tobacco companies representing most of the major cigarette makers in the United States challenged the FDA rules: Reynolds American Inc, Lorillard Inc; Commonwealth Brands Inc, which is owned by Britain's Imperial Tobacco Group Plc; Liggett Group LLC and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co Inc.

The FDA has argued the images of rotting teeth and diseased lungs are accurate and necessary to warn consumers -- especially teenagers -- about the risks of smoking.

The health agency said on Friday that it does not comment on possible, pending or ongoing litigation. The U.S. Department of Justice, which argued the case for the FDA, said it needs to review the ruling before deciding on next steps.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, which has vigorously supported stricter cigarette laws, urged the government to appeal.

"Today's ruling is wrong on the science and law, and it is by no means the final word on the new cigarette warnings," said Matthew Myers, the group's president, in a statement.

YOUTH EPIDEMIC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates some 45 million U.S. adults smoke cigarettes, which are the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. And the World Health Organization predicts smoking could kill 8 million people each year by 2030 if governments do not do more to help people quit.

The U.S. Surgeon General warned in March that youth smoking has reached epidemic proportions, as one in four U.S. high school seniors is a regular cigarette smoker, paving the way to a lifetime of addiction.

Judge Judith Rogers, who wrote the dissenting opinion, said the FDA warnings were factual, and necessary to counter tobacco companies' history of deceptive advertising.

"The government has an interest of paramount importance in effectively conveying information about the health risks of smoking to adolescent would-be smokers and other consumers," she wrote.

Congress passed a law in 2009 that gave the FDA broad powers to regulate the tobacco industry, including imposing the label regulation. The law requires color warning labels big enough to cover the top 50 percent of a cigarette pack's front and back panels, and the top 20 percent of print advertisements.

The FDA released nine new warnings in June 2011 that were meant to go into effect this September, the first change in U.S. cigarette warning labels in 25 years. Cigarette packs already carry text warnings from the U.S. Surgeon General.

The ruling against the FDA means tobacco companies will likely not have to comply with the requirements for now, given divergent court rulings.

The U.S. Appeals Court for the 6th Circuit, based in Cincinnati, upheld the bulk of the FDA's new tobacco regulations in March, including the requirement for warning images on cigarette packs.

The difference in the two cases is that the FDA had not introduced the specific images when the companies filed the 6th Circuit suit. While the Washington suit focused on the images, the appeals court in Cincinnati addressed the larger issue of the FDA's regulatory power.

Most countries in the European Union already carry graphic images to illustrate the health risks of smoking. Earlier this month, Australia took a further step to limit smoking advertising by banning company logos on cigarette packs, and the EU said it was considering a similar ban.

19 dead, 53 hurt in blast at Venezuela refinery

Daniela Primera / AP

Balls of fire rise over Amuay refinery near Punto Fijo, Venezuela, Saturday, after a massive explosion.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Updated at 8:45 a.m. ET: A gas explosion at Venezuela's Amuay refinery killed 19 people and injured at least 53, a?state governor said Saturday.

Falcon state Gov. Stella Lugo said the victims included a 10-year-old boy.

"There's no risk of another explosion," she told state TV earlier. "Right now, we're attending to the injured."

The plant in Paraguana in the country's west?is its largest refinery, producing some 645,000-barrels a day.

"There was a gas leak," Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez told state TV. "A cloud of gas exploded ... it was a significant explosion, there are appreciable damages to infrastructure and houses opposite the refinery."

Venezuela?s El Universal newspaper published a picture showing the night sky glowing orange with flames.

Both Ramirez and workers said there had been injuries, but gave no more details.

Emergency workers were at the scene, where smoke and flames could be seen over the facility. Inhabitants of the immediate area were being evacuated, authorities said.

Ivan Freites, a union leader at the state oil company PDVSA, said foam would be used to control the fire.

PDVSA has struggled with repeated refinery problems in recent years, affecting its production figures and ability to fulfil ambitious expansion plans.

Power faults, accidents and planned stoppages for maintenance have hit exports from South America's biggest crude producer and OPEC member.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Turkish-Cypriot tycoon Nadir jailed for ten years in Britain

Turkish-Cypriot tycoon Asil Nadir, once one of Britain's most notorious fugitives, was on Thursday jailed for ten years for stealing millions of pounds from his international business empire.

The flamboyant 71-year-old was convicted in London this week on ten charges of theft from his now-defunct conglomerate, Polly Peck International, between 1987 and 1990.

Nadir's thefts totalled ?28.8 million, the equivalent of more than ?61.6 million ($97.8 million, 77.9 million euros) in today's terms.

"You were a wealthy man who stole out of pure greed," Judge Tim Holroyde told Nadir at London's Old Bailey court.

Holroyde said Nadir would serve only half of his prison sentence before being eligible for release on licence.

Nadir said in a statement issued through his lawyers that he was "most disappointed" by the verdicts.

"He maintains that he is totally innocent of all charges and will be lodging an appeal," the statement said.

Nadir's 28-year-old wife Nur said outside the court: "My husband is innocent and, having faith in the British justice system, we will continue with our efforts to rectify the wrongs.

"His business genius created a global company, which brought jobs and prosperity to tens of thousands of people around the world.

"The image that has been portrayed of him as being one who solely lived off of the benefits of Polly Peck is a great prejudice to the truth."

Nadir was arrested when Polly Peck collapsed in 1990 with debts of ?550 million, after an investigation by Britain's Serious Fraud Office.

He was one of the most prominent businessmen in Britain in the 1980s and early 1990s, after building up Polly Peck from a small textile firm into a sprawling company with interests ranging from fruit to electronics.

He fled in May 1993 to the breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is recognised only by Turkey and does not have an extradition treaty with Britain.

Most of Polly Peck's business was based in Turkey and the TNRC.

Nadir returned to Britain voluntarily in August 2010 in a dramatic bid to clear his name after 17 years as a fugitive.

He lived in a ?23,000-a-month house in the exclusive Mayfair district of west London during the trial, and was driven to court each day by a chauffeur.

Nadir was named Britain's 36th wealthiest man by the Sunday Times Rich List in 1990 and donated large sums to Britain's Conservative Party via his company.

The party on Wednesday rejected calls to repay the donations, insisting there was no evidence the money was stolen and that it had not come from Nadir but from his company.

Nadir's defence lawyer Philip Hackett told the court he had returned despite having heart disease and asked the judge to give Nadir credit for the 720 days he had been electronically tagged.

The judge said he had reduced the term he would have given Nadir by two years to take into account his voluntary return, his previous good character and the fact that he had worn the electronic tag.

A hearing will be held on September 27 to decide on the amount of compensation and interest Nadir will be ordered to pay to Polly Peck's administrators.

The judge will also have to decide on ordering him to pay prosecution costs of ?2.5 million, and repaying his legal aid costs.

NBA Rumors: Kings Would Be Insane to Move to Virginia Beach over Seattle

Now that Dwight Howard has finally been traded, the new worst-kept secret of the NBA is that the Sacramento Kings are moving somewhere in the next year or so.

On paper, Seattle seems like the perfect fit.

The city just lost the SuperSonics to Oklahoma City in 2008, a franchise that won the 1979 NBA championship and is in one of the wealthiest metropolitan areas (via ABC News) in the United States. If there is any city without an NBA team that could still support one, it's Seattle.

So with the Kings all but certainly on the move, the city's overzealous fanbase and rich basketball history has to make it the overwhelming favorite, right?

Wrong.

According to a report by the Philip Newswanger and Bill Cresenzo of the Hampton Roads Business Journal, the Kings' most likely destination is now Virginia Beach. Though that may seem like a shocker at first, media conglomerate Comcast is playing a large role behind the scenes and may have enough capital to pull off the move.

Via Hampton Roads Business Journal:

Media giant Comcast will guarantee a 25-year lease on a new arena, supposedly for naming rights and for broadcasting the games, sources said. Comcast owns NBC and Global Spectrum, which operates arenas and stadiums across the country including the Ted Constant Convocation Center at Old Dominion University.

If the Kings wind up in Virginia Beach, it would be almost as large of a travesty for Seattle (and NBA fans) as the original franchise's move to OKC.

Where Seattle was once a middling sports town that (understandably) refused to pay for a new arena, the four years since the creation of the Thunder have been one of a reputation renaissance.

Where would you like to see the Kings relocate?

Where would you like to see the Kings relocate?

  • Seattle

  • Virginia Beach

  • Kansas City

  • Stay in Sacramento

  • Other

Seattle's Major League Soccer team, the Sounders, has led the league in attendance every year since the franchise's inception in 2009. The Seattle fans are widely regarded as loyal fans that are as knowledgeable about the game as they are passionate.

But the Sounders aren't the Sonics.

That's why, with a new arena in Seattle looking more likely than ever, over 4,000 fans descended upon downtown for a "Bring Back the Sonics" rally in June (via ESPN).

At the head of the rally? Hedge fund manager Chris R. Hansen.

Armed with a group of wealthy investors, including Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Peter and Erik Nordstrom, Hansen is currently at the head of a group trying to bring a new arena to the city. Offering $290 million in private investments, the Valiant Capital founder's group is asking just $200 million from King County and the city of Seattle (via ESPN).

In today's market, that's a paltry sum.

If all things are equal in the checkbook and arena department, if the Maloofs sell the Kings to the Virginia Beach group over the Hansen-led one, it would be doing the league a massive disservice.

The Maloofs would force the franchise to a touristy area not ripe with long-term residents or a storied passion for the NBA.

Seattle now has the passion, the financial wherewithal and rich history to make the city a perfect home for the soon-to-be-departed Kings.

A move to Virginia Beach strips that opportunity for Sonics fans and fans of the NBA, period.
